Here’s an opportunity for students to become hurricane detectives! NASA scientists follow the clues that are left behind by these storms, then try to put the pieces together to determine the timeline, formation and contributing factors of the storm. Students have an opportunity to consult with a NASA scientist or educator, analyze NASA data, and communicate their findings. Students will then become a hurricane and describe their lives in the form of a story. As educators know, the best way to demonstrate understanding is to communicate and teach others. Classmates will be enthralled as each student relates their life as a hurricane.
The Hurricanes! Challenge objectives are for students to (1) learn that the earth is a system and that different parts of the system interact to form hurricanes, (2) understand and describe the factors that contribute to hurricane formation, (3) analyze atmospheric data from NASA satellites, and (4) communicate their understanding by developing a short story outlining the life of a hurricane.
Detailed instructions about Mission: Hurricanes!, a list of sample projects, the scoring rubric and more can be found in the Mission: Hurricanes! Guide (link to pdf).
Videoconferencing events for this Challenge are optional. If you do not have a videoconference system in your school, check with your local National Guard facility or your NASA DLN Coordinators.
